We were watching television.
“Do we have ice cream?” she said.
I looked at her. I looked at the dog in her lap. I looked and saw that she was comfortable.
“You want me to get some ice cream?” I said already knowing the answer.
It had been a long day, a hike up a mountain trail in a nearby canyon looking for Grouse. We didn’t see any, nor did we see any later when we walked along a trail in another canyon. We beat the summer heat for awhile, but when we finally finished about 11:00 a.m. it was nearly 90 degrees.
“You want me to get some ice cream,” I said, this time out loud, knowing that she would say yes.
I wanted ice cream too, but didn’t want to leave my comfortable chair. “I’m older than you” I said.
She smiled, “I never thought I’d hear you say that,” she said.
I got up from the chair and returned moments later with the ice cream.
